History of shih tzu, or in the footsteps of legends
The origin of the shih tzu is mysterious and based primarily on legends and legends. One of the legends has it that a dog of this breed accompanied the Buddha during his travels through the world. In moments of danger, he transformed into a dangerous lion. According to the beliefs of the Lamas, the spiritual lion had three powers: the ability to long jump, walks in the dust and in the fog, and also had the loudest voice. Therefore, the Tibetan clergy especially supported the breeding of this breed. We know from legends that the most beautiful shih tzu specimens were chosen as gifts for the rulers of the Chinese Empire. In China, small dogs have been recognized for centuries and treated with great respect. However, they reached their peak of popularity in the first half of the XNUMXth century. At that time, a dog that was highly valued, could easily hide in the wide sleeve of the emperor's robe. And despite the fact that other breeds of small dogs were also bred in the palace: pugs and Pekingese, it was the shih tzu that became the emperors' favorites.
What does a shih tzu look like?
The shih tzu breed is characterized by a small size, i.e. about 28 centimeters high at the withers (weight from 4 to 8 kilograms) and a long and dense coat. Individuals of this breed have a variety of colors, both uniform and multi-colored with white markings. The head of a shih tzu is large, round, with a short, flat and wide mouth. The dog of this breed has thick fur on the sideburns and on the chin itself. The nose is usually a few centimeters long and the nostrils are wide open. It has large, round, usually dark eyes, set shallowly, spaced well apart. The ears are large, pendulous, and very hairy. The back is straight and the chest is wide. It carries high, proudly raised tail. The legs are short and muscular, the feet have strong pads and are profusely hairy along the entire length. It is worth mentioning that there are differences between the two breed varieties: European and American. The American variety is more delicate in appearance, while the representatives of the European race are more massive.

Usually, it does not cause conflicts, and it tolerates the presence of other pets well. He can adapt to all conditions. It can even share a small apartment with another dog or cat. He is energetic, lively, likes exercise, playing outdoors and not too long walks.
Proper nutrition
Representatives of the Shih Tzu breed may show a tendency to gain weight. The quantity and quality of food must be controlled. Avoid giving your pet treats, especially between meals. Dry, well-balanced food works great. In the case of dogs up to 3 months of age, the food should be soaked and left to swell before serving. Puppies should initially be fed four times a day, then gradually reduce the number of meals to two per day. It is very important that the food contains all the necessary nutrients. In a situation where the pet is fed with homemade food, does not eat the entire portion of dry food or has problems with the digestive system, it may be necessary to supplement vitamins and minerals.
