A dog in the city during the coronavirus pandemic. What do you need to know?

For several weeks now, the spreading coronavirus pandemic has been keeping us awake at night and arousing more and more anxiety. We often subordinate our everyday life to it, carefully listening to the latest reports and restrictions, resigning from social gatherings and avoiding leaving home in order to limit the transmission of the virus. Amid concerns for our health and life, caring for dogs also brings us a lot of uncertainty.

According to the current restrictions (as of March 31.03.2020, 19) regarding the limitation of the spread of the COVID-XNUMX virus in Poland, dog keepers have the right to walk their pets out, provided that they are not subject to compulsory quarantine. Walks in the urban space should be short and preferably limited to taking care of their physiological needs, if, however, there is a possibility to go own car for a walk in places rarely frequented by people, e.g. a forest, a river, a clearing - it is worth using this option for common mental health;)

What precautions should we take?

The most important thing to avoid during walks is meeting other people, so it is worth giving up traveling by public transport, limiting playing with dog friends and giving up organizing group walks - here it should be emphasized that there are restrictions on the movement of up to 2 people (except for families), so we must not walk in a groupeven if the primary reason is the need to walk the dog. Exciting trips in the company of a few dog lovers and their pets should be postponed.

We also avoid letting the dog off the leash - in the event of his escape, the search for an escapee requires active stay outside the home and contact with outsiders.

We should be especially careful when meeting strange dogs, it happens that an unforeseen confrontation with dogs must end with a visit to the vet.

How to protect your dog during walks during these restrictions?

An indispensable part of any walk should be well fitted suspenders and/ or collar and leash. If your dog has fallen out of the harness in the past, it is worth protecting it by using suspenders anti-leakage or put on a collar and harness at the same time, fastening to each of them separately city lanyard or one Reversible leash by attaching both carabiners to separate, dedicated semicircles.

Properly securing your dog against escape is especially important if you are under compulsory quarantine and you have to transfer the care of your dog to another person!

I am under compulsory quarantine - what about my dog?

Compulsory quarantine applies to people who may come into contact with a person infected with the COVID-19 virus. During its duration, it is absolutely necessary to stay at home throughout the ordered time, regardless of the reason for leaving it. If we do not have a backyard garden where the dog could take care of its physiological needs, care for a pet should be entrusted to a trusted person from outside the household.

There are several rescue options - we can decide on:

  • handing it over to a temporary home,
  • trusted hotel for pets
  • ask to take the pooch for walks.

You should not be afraid that the dog will infect you with the virus, according to the latest data, it is not possible to get the infection directly from your pet, and the probability of getting the virus through the animal's hair is very low (for: dr. Dorota Sumińska). However, it is worth following all possible precautions when transferring your dog to another person's care.

The basic principle is to protect the dog with the selection of appropriate accessories, mentioned earlier. This is especially important in the case of dogs who are fearful, distrustful, have problems with contact with strangers or are not used to going for walks with a person other than the owner. Harnesses anti-leakage and leash pinned to dedicated semi-circles, they will prove themselves as they are! Remember not to let the dog off the leash, even a well-trained dog may have a problem returning to a new owner.

If our pooch is going to be taken only for walks, staying with us on a daily basis at home, it is necessary to take special care of the cleanliness of his accessories. Our fast drying tape will allow you to clean the leash even between walks. All dog accessories should be stored in one place, preferably right next to the door. The harness and collar should be take off after each walkand wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or disinfect them before putting them on again. If you usually use jackets, it is worth giving them up during this period.

The dog wearing the harness, collar and leash should be handed over to the person walking it avoiding direct contact.

For breaking each of the imposed rules, we risk from 5 to 30. zloty fines. Keep this in mind when walking with your pet! [/ wc_box]
