Representatives of the largest dog breeds make a huge impression. They inspire respect and intimidation. Interestingly, large dogs are often much quieter and more gentle than their smaller brethren. Although their enormous size may initially cause embarrassment or even anxiety, proper upbringing makes them good-natured, loyal and affectionate companions.
In order to classify and describe dogs according to their size in accordance with the breed standard, three basic categories relating to height at the withers were adopted. These dogs are truly unique and impressive! Since ancient times, large breeds of dogs have protected people and their property, accompanied them during hunts and expeditions, guarded homes and pastures, and took part in fights. As in the past, they are also now great as guard dogs, defense dogs, hunting dogs, and at the same time, devoted family members. The vast majority of them require an experienced, decisive caregiver with leadership skills. They all need good upbringing, early socialization, and a patient, positive and consistent approach.
It is among the largest representatives of large dog breeds. A male St. Bernard can reach a height at the withers of up to 90 cm, females of this breed are about 80 cm tall. The standard allows larger sizes than specified, provided that the dogs are harmoniously built and move properly. Saint Bernards were originally used as search and rescue dogs in snowy areas in the Swiss Alps. They have a balanced character and generally a gentle, calm temperament. They are friendly by nature and get along well with children and other animals.

This is another large dog from the large breed category. The Irish Wolfhound reaches a minimum size at the withers: 79 cm in males and 71 cm in females. Height and body weight below the minimum specified by the standard constitute an eliminating defect. It happens that representatives of this breed exceed 90 cm in height. In practice, greater height, provided that the correct proportions are maintained (the ratio of the height at the withers to the length of the body), is often a sought-after advantage. The Irish Wolfhound is an impressive-looking dog, well-muscled, strongly built, but elegant. He comes from a hunting background. Until the XNUMXth century, it was used for deer hunting. He was also very helpful in fighting wolves. His gentle, patient and considerate character makes him a great family dog.
Traditionally, representatives of this breed were used to guard homes, guard and defend flocks and cattle against predators. This powerful dog is characterized by a harmonious body structure, a massive silhouette with strong bones. Sexual dimorphism is typical for this large breed of dogs; dogs are distinguished from females by more clearly defined withers, a larger head and a more massive body structure. Adult dogs reach 72-75 cm (minimum 68 cm), females 67-70 cm (minimum 64 cm). The pattern allows for larger sizes while maintaining a harmonious structure. Because Caucasian Shepherd Dogs have a strong protective instinct and often a dominant character, they require early socialization. They also require an experienced caregiver who acts with iron consistency. Despite their independent nature, they are very attached to their family. They are endlessly devoted, friendly and affectionate.

It is a strong dog with a strong, compact figure. Male kangals reach a height at the withers of 72-78 cm, females 65-73 cm. The standard allows for a two-centimeter tolerance. Originally, the kangal was used as a shepherd and protection dog. They still do this work today, especially in eastern Turkey. This large breed of dogs is distinguished by courage, lack of aggression, natural independence, high intelligence, loyalty and tenderness towards loved ones.

It is a massive, powerful dog with a symmetrical, majestic figure. Dogs of this breed reach up to 90 cm in height at the withers, and females reach about 75 cm. The size is not strictly defined in the breed standard, but it should match the correct body proportions. Although the mastiff has a belligerent past, it now has a reputation as a dog with a balanced temperament, an affectionate and calm disposition. Seemingly phlegmatic, in moments of danger he reacts with surprising speed. Nowadays, the mastiff serves mainly as a companion dog, it is an excellent defender, guard and a very devoted four-legged friend.
And finally, a real titan on four legs. The greatest achievements in terms of height at the withers belong to the representatives of this breed of large dogs. The title of the largest dog in the world went to a Great Dane named Zeus. The male living in the USA broke all records. When the Great Dane stood on his hind legs, he towered significantly over his master. Currently, the title of the largest dog also belongs to a Great Dane named Zeus. The dog is slightly shorter than its famous predecessor, measuring 1046 cm at the withers.
According to the standard, Great Danes reach a height of 80-90 cm (males), and females - from 72 to 84 cm. They are characterized by an elegant, proportional, compact and strong silhouette. Despite their considerable size, they are known for their friendly, reserved and gentle disposition. They show great devotion and a loving, tender attitude towards their loved ones. In everyday life, they are confident, fearless and cautious towards strangers. They need patient, empathetic upbringing and an experienced, consistent caregiver.
