How to fit a dog collar?
Properly fitting your dog's collar is important to ensure its comfort and safety. Here are the steps to help you properly choose and then adjust the collar.
Before purchasing a collar
- Measuring the dog's neck circumference
- Use a tape measure to measure your dog's neck circumference. Measure at the place where the collar will be worn, i.e. at the level of the neck, close to the ears and under the jaw.
- Correct choice of collar size
- Choose a collar of the appropriate size according to the measurement result. Compare your neck measurement with your size adjustment range.
- Choose the right width - let the collar cover at least two cervical vertebrae. A collar that is too narrow will cause pressure points on the cervical vertebrae, and a collar that is too wide will make it difficult to turn the head.
After purchasing the collar
You already have a new collar in your hands, the dog goes crazy at the sight of the collar and runs out the door (or with the door). Go to a room or other quiet place that is not clearly associated with a walk to tone down the emotions and start fitting the collar around the neck when the dog is calm.
- Adjust the collar in your hands, not on the dog
- Collar adjustment
- Undo the buckle on the collar.
- Adjust the length of the collar by eye or by holding it to the dog to best fit the dog's neck circumference.
- Use adjusters to adjust - pull and push the tape through the adjuster to obtain the desired circumference.
- Check fit
- After initially adjusting the collar, place it around your dog's neck.
- Make sure you can fit two fingers between the collar and your dog's neck. This will ensure that the collar is not tight, which could impede breathing, but also not too loose that it cannot slip off the neck.
- Check the collar regularly
- Periodically check that the collar still fits properly, especially if your dog is still young and growing.
- Make sure the buckle is in good condition and both wings are intact.
Remember that the collar should be used responsibly and wearing it should not cause any discomfort or suffering to the dog. If you have any doubts about choosing or adjusting the collar, write to us!
