Representatives of the largest dog breeds make a huge impression. They inspire respect and intimidation. Interestingly, large dogs are often much quieter and more gentle than their smaller brethren. Although their enormous size may initially cause embarrassment or even anxiety, proper upbringing makes them good-natured, loyal and affectionate companions.
In order to classify and describe dogs according to their size in accordance with the breed standard, three basic categories relating to height at the withers were adopted. These dogs are truly unique and impressive! Since ancient times, large breeds of dogs have protected people and their property, accompanied them during hunts and expeditions, guarded homes and pastures, and took part in fights. As in the past, they are also now great as guard dogs, defense dogs, hunting dogs, and at the same time, devoted family members. The vast majority of them require an experienced, decisive caregiver with leadership skills. They all need good upbringing, early socialization, and a patient, positive and consistent approach.
It is among the largest representatives of large dog breeds. A male St. Bernard can reach a height at the withers of up to 90 cm, females of this breed are about 80 cm tall. The standard allows larger sizes than specified, provided that the dogs are harmoniously built and move properly. Saint Bernards were originally used as search and rescue dogs in snowy areas in the Swiss Alps. They have a balanced character and generally a gentle, calm temperament. They are friendly by nature and get along well with children and other animals.
Saint Bernards are also renowned for their loyalty to their owners and strong attachment to all household members. Due to their size, they require adequate space and regular exercise, although they are not overly energetic. Their thick coat requires regular grooming, especially during shedding season. Saint Bernards make excellent family and companion dogs. They are distinguished by their sharp minds and excellent memories, and demonstrate a strong willingness to learn and cooperate, especially with calm and systematic training.

This is another large-breed dog of considerable size. The Irish Wolfhound has a minimum shoulder height of 79 cm for males and 71 cm for females. Height and weight below the minimum specified by the standard constitute an eliminating fault. Occasionally, members of this breed exceed 90 cm in height. In practice, greater height, provided proper proportions are maintained (the ratio of height at the withers to body length), is often a sought-after quality.
The Irish Wolfhound is an impressive-looking dog, well-muscled, powerfully built, yet elegant. It originates from a hunting background. Until the 18th century, it was used for hunting deer. It was also very helpful in wolf control. Its gentle, patient, and thoughtful nature makes it an excellent family dog. It is friendly, devoted, and sensitive, especially to the emotions of its owners. Calm by nature, it gets along well with children and other animals, provided it has been properly socialized. Although not aggressive, it can defend loved ones when necessary, while maintaining composure and consideration.

It belongs to a breed that can certainly be described as large dogs. The Newfoundland is a powerful, strong dog known for its gentle temperament. Males measure approximately 71 cm at the shoulder, while females measure approximately 66 cm. This breed is renowned for its excellent swimming abilities. These dogs have webbed toes and waterproof fur, making them excellent water rescuers. They have been known to single-handedly save people from drowning.
Newfoundlands are incredibly patient, friendly, and caring. They are often referred to as gentle giants. They are intelligent and eager to cooperate, although they can learn at their own pace. They aren't overly energetic, but they enjoy being kept busy and eager to perform tasks that strengthen their bond with their humans. They thrive in families, especially those with children, and their calm nature makes them easy to train. However, they do require close human contact, regular walks, and regular grooming for their lush coat.
This breed immediately attracts attention. As befits a large dog, it presents an exceptionally impressive appearance. Traditionally, the Caucasian Shepherd was used to guard homes, guarding and defending flocks and cattle from predators. This powerful dog is characterized by a harmonious physique, a massive build, and strong bones. Sexual dimorphism is typical of this large breed, with males distinguished from females by a more pronounced withers, a larger head, and a more robust build. Adult males reach a height of 72-75 cm (minimum 68 cm), females 67-70 cm (minimum 64 cm). The standard allows for larger sizes as long as a harmonious build is maintained.
The Caucasian Shepherd is a typical guard dog, brave, determined, and ready to defend its territory without hesitation. Because they have a strong protective instinct and are often dominant, they require early socialization. They also require an experienced owner who is unwavering in their approach. Their cooperation is primarily motivated by the trust and respect they have built for their owner. Despite their independent nature, they develop a strong attachment to their family. They are endlessly devoted, friendly, and affectionate, though they can express this affection in a reserved manner.

Like most large dog breeds, the Kangal is distinguished by its strength and majestic physique. Males reach a shoulder height of 72-78 cm, while females reach 65-73 cm. Originally, the Kangal was used as a herding and guard dog, a role they still perform today, particularly in eastern Turkey. This large dog breed is distinguished by its courage, lack of aggression, natural independence, and high intelligence. Furthermore, it is characterized by loyalty and affection towards loved ones, although it can be reserved in expressing emotions.
As a guard dog, the Kangal dog demonstrates a strong territorial instinct. It is exceptionally alert, making it an excellent protector. It is also even-tempered and calm, and with proper socialization, it can be friendly towards people and other animals. Due to its independence, it requires an experienced owner who will consistently guide it and provide it with adequate physical and mental activity.

This is an imposing dog with a powerful physique, typical of the large breed. Males reach a height of 72-80 cm at the withers, and females 65-75 cm. Despite its impressive size, it has a balanced disposition, an exceptionally gentle nature, and is full of patience and devotion. It develops a strong attachment to its family and dislikes loneliness, so it thrives best when close to humans. It requires full participation in home life.
The Leonberger is an excellent family dog. It's gentle with children and sociable with other animals. It enjoys spending time in the water, as swimming is a natural and exceptionally enjoyable activity for them. It's intelligent and eager to please its owner, which is why it responds well to positive training. Its thick, double-layered coat requires proper care. Regular walks are crucial for the dog's well-being; it thrives on leisurely, not strenuous hikes.

This massive, powerful dog, with its symmetrical, majestic physique, commands respect. Males of this breed can reach up to 90 cm at the shoulder, while females reach around 75 cm. While the breed standard doesn't specify a specific size, it should reflect the correct body proportions. Although the Mastiff has a belligerent past, it now has a reputation for a balanced temperament and a sensitive, calm demeanor. Seemingly phlegmatic, it reacts with surprising speed in moments of danger.
Today, the Mastiff primarily serves as a companion dog, making it an excellent defender, watchdog, and a very devoted four-legged friend. It develops a strong bond with its family and has a natural protective instinct. It usually chooses one person as its primary guide. It can be reserved with strangers, but not aggressive. It is very patient with children, as long as it is treated with respect. Although it may appear intimidating, it usually avoids conflict and reacts with consideration and calm. It is sensitive to the emotions of its family members, so it thrives in an atmosphere of peace and stability.
And finally, a true titan on four paws. This breed of large dog boasts the highest achievements in terms of shoulder height. The title of world's largest dog was awarded to a Great Dane named Zeus. A male living in the US broke all records. When standing on his hind legs, the Great Dane towered significantly over his owner. Currently, the title of largest dog also belongs to a Great Dane named Zeus. He is slightly shorter than his famous predecessor, standing 104,6 cm at the shoulder.
According to the standard, Great Danes reach a height of 80-90 cm (males), and females - from 72 to 84 cm. They are characterized by an elegant, proportional, compact and strong silhouette. Despite their considerable size, they are known for their friendly, reserved and gentle disposition. They show great devotion and a loving, tender attitude towards their loved ones. In everyday life, they are confident, fearless and cautious towards strangers. They need patient, empathetic upbringing and an experienced, consistent caregiver.

It is this extraordinary balance between its hunting passion and its affectionate nature that makes the Scottish Setter a dog that captures the hearts of many.
The bull terrier is a muscular, dynamic dog with an original appearance, in which there is a volcano of energy and a huge will to play. Properly brought up and socialized from a puppy, it becomes a faithful, devoted and affectionate family friend.
