The dog's nose is an exceptionally sensitive and accurate tool that helps to learn about the outside world and analyze various stimuli from the environment. It also plays a dominant role in the perception of emotional states in people and other animals. A wet, cool nose is a reflection of the processes taking place in the dog's body and is commonly considered a symptom of the dog's health and good condition. But should a dog's dry nose always be a cause for concern?

Dry nose in a dog. If a dog has a dry and warm nose, it does not necessarily mean that he is sick. There are situations in which this state is natural and should not cause us to react violently. The dryness of truffles may appear immediately after waking up, on hot or windy days, or in air-conditioned rooms. It can also be a consequence of sleeping in an unnatural position, too high air temperature, caused by setting the maximum values ​​in the radiators. It can also be the result of prolonged sunbathing in a sunny place or improper air circulation in the apartment.

A dog that runs intensively during a walk may also have a dry nose, often nibbling in the ground or rubbing it against a hard surface. The epidermis of the nose of such a quadruped becomes excessively dry and peels off. In such cases, there is no need to visit the vet, but it is worth getting an ointment (balm) that regenerates the epidermis, which will protect the pet's nose against excessive drying. 

A dry nose in a dog - does it mean disease?

If our pet has a dry and warm nose for a long time, it may indicate health problems. First of all, it is necessary to check whether the dog has the correct body temperature, ie in the range of 37,5–39,5 degrees C. The temperature is measured rectally, using an electronic or mercury thermometer. All deviations from this standard may be disturbing. If you additionally notice that your pet is apathetic, depressed, has no appetite, has vomiting, diarrhea, you should definitely consult a vet. Determining the cause of the disease determines further treatment. Since the prolonged dryness of truffles causes irritation, cracks and keratosis of the epidermis, in addition to medications, appropriate ointments are usually also used in the treatment.

The most common cause of the condition, which may include a dry and warm nose, is inflammation in the dog's body. A fever occurs and further diagnosis is needed to determine the source of the disease.

Among other conditions that are manifested by dry nose, the following can be mentioned:

  • dehydration last year, which is excessive loss of body fluids. It is a dangerous condition that may be a consequence of, among others: diarrhea, vomiting, overheating, lack of access to water. It causes dryness of truffles and gums and changes in their color, eyeballs collapse, and loss of skin elasticity. In acute cases, immediate veterinary help is needed. You should ensure that your pet always has fresh water in the bowl, especially on hot days, during long walks or journeys. When determining the needs in this area, we must take into account: age, activity, health condition and the diet of the dog.
  • sunburnas a consequence of which there is dryness, redness, irritation and flaking of the epidermis of the nose. The truffle becomes very painful, inflamed, chapped and requires the help of a vet. Dogs with light noses are particularly at risk of sunburn. It is worth applying prophylaxis in special forms sunscreen creams (dedicated to animals). 
  • distemperwhich a dozen or so years ago was a very serious problem. It is an infectious disease whose first symptom is high fever, leading to dangerous dehydration. It is accompanied by a dry and very warm nose, which becomes visibly cracked in the next stage. If the condition shows characteristic symptoms, the veterinarian will perform a diagnostic test with a drop of blood and can use the results to confirm that it is present. The risk of developing this dangerous viral disease can be reduced by regularly vaccinating your dog.
  • allergy, occurring in two forms: contact and inhalation as well as food. The first type results from the presence of allergenic substances in the environment, the second type is a reaction to substances present in food. The most common dog allergens are: dairy, poultry, lamb, vegetable proteins derived from soy and corn, and food dyes and preservatives. Symptoms of allergy can be alleviated with pharmacological agents, the method of desensitization or a change in diet and proper care of irritated skin. In the case of the contact and inhalation forms, aim should be to detect and eliminate the allergen.

Remember that neither a wet nor a dry nose is the basis for assessing your pet's health. It happens that the resident has a cold and wet nose also during illness. On the other hand, a warm, rough nose does not always have to be a symptom of a serious disease. It is worth observing your dog every day, pay attention to deviations in behavior and only then take action adequately to the situation.
