Why does the dog bite?
Let's take a closer look at the causes of this disruptive behavior. In the leading places we find: boredom, excess energy and medicine. Dogs do not like loneliness, they need close contact with humans, play, interest, caresses or just presence. Pets left alone for long periods of time at home are usually bored or anxious. Then some dogs howl or bark, others begin to scratch furniture or bite objects. Some choose one object, others are pouring all over the house trying to discharge excess energy. Very often, dogs chewing, biting, or biting allow them to deal with tension and anxiety. It is also a form of getting to know the world and calming emotions. In the case of puppies, the bite problem may be related to the eruption of teeth or their replacement. The first milk teeth, most often incisors, appear in dogs in the third or fourth week of life. By week eight, your puppy should have all 28 milk teeth. To help relieve itchy gums, your puppy naturally needs to chew. In the period of permanent replacement of milk teeth, i.e. from 3 to about 8 months of age, the situation repeats itself.
How to teach a dog to chew on objects?
Of course, there is no ready recipe that will work in every case. We must be patient and accept that many methods require iron consistency and a lot of time. First of all, if we notice that our pet loves to bite various things, we need to remove all objects from its immediate environment that could pose a threat to it, cause illness or harm. So we hide all the little things, parts of toys, glass and plastic ornaments.
If we spend a lot of time outside the home, we must gradually get the pet used to our absence. We can also use online studies illustrating dog separation training. Another action that we can take is engaging your pet in various types of physical activity. Let's go for long walks, do sports together, have fun, and train commands. Before leaving the house, we can try to discharge the accumulated energy with games and training. Offer him interesting toys, attractive chewing bones or other gadgets that attract the dog's attention. We should also remember two things: we do not use old or unnecessary garments to play with. The dog cannot distinguish between new and old things and when he gets bored with a used slipper, he will be eager to sink his teeth into a new one. The second element is the need to regularly replace play items. There are various motivational toys available on the market that support the intellect, concentration, engage the quadruped and satisfy its curiosity.
If the dog directs its destructive impulses towards a specific object, we can spray its surface with a repellent spray, which has an unpleasant, bitter taste that discourages biting. We only buy preparations that contain natural substances, i.e. compounds that are harmless to animals. The offer includes both unscented agents and those enriched with a pleasant aroma.
How to make your dog bite at home?
Our hands should associate a pet with delicate, affectionate gestures. While playing, do not allow the dog to bite his hands, feet or jerking clothes. If the dog catches our hand with its teeth, we respond with the command "leave", "no" or "not allowed". Then we withdraw our hands, stop playing and walk away. The pet receives a signal that the fun has just ended. After a while, we make another attempt. If the situation repeats itself, we interrupt the play again and leave the room. We repeat the actions until our dog understands that biting is the reason the play ends. It will be a signal for him that we do not like such behavior and that if he wants to continue playing, he must change it. Of course, the condition for the effectiveness of this method is iron persistence and patience. Dogs are intelligent quadrupeds and sooner or later this method will be effective.
How to unlearn a dog to bite and understand it at the same time?
Let's pay attention to the fact that every behavior of our pet has its cause. Often undesirable behavior of the charge results from the fact that we devote too little time to the pet, we do not understand its needs or nature. Our dog must be provided with the right amount of exercise, play and work, and understanding his psyche is the basis for overcoming most problems. Let us also remember that to a large extent it depends on us what habits the dog will acquire. Let's not provoke him to jerk, jump, let's not let him bite our hands, let's not impose himself with stroking, hugging or other gestures of sympathy. When the dog starts to bite, always react with a firm but gentle gesture. No matter which method of weaning the dog from biting we choose, we must be aware that only consistent behavior brings the intended results.
