How to effectively teach your dog the dead dog command? - training tips
No special equipment is required to learn the dead dog command, just prepare a handful of your pet's favorite treats. Small treats are the best. training portions that the dog can eat without much effort. They will be an excellent reward for your furry friend and at the same time motivate your pet to act.
Dog training can be carried out both in the apartment and, for example, in the home garden. The main thing is that it should be a calm environment that will not irritate and distract your furry student. Thanks to this, the dog will be able to fully concentrate on training.
It should be remembered that learning the dead dog command can only be started after the quadruped has mastered other commands, such as: sit, down or stay and the release command.
How do you teach your dog the dead dog command?
Here are our training tips in six steps:
1 step
In a calm voice, we urge the dog to lie down. For his comfort, your pet will favor one hip. We crouch in front of him and watch which way his torso tilts. Then we take a treat in our hand and hold it near the dog's nose. Then, luring with a treat, we persuade the ward to turn over on its side. To do this, we move the treat diagonally over the opposite shoulder in relation to the weighted hip. This means that if the dog's weight is on the left hip, we direct the treat over the dog's right shoulder. This step is somewhat like teaching a dog to roll over. When the dog leans back, it's time for verbal praise and rewarding with a treat. We repeat this exercise five times.
Tip - it is worth starting this exercise on a soft surface (carpet, grass). In addition, to achieve success in training, reward even small steps. This means rewarding the dog for following the movement of his hand with his head. In this way, the pet knows that its behavior is desirable and will quickly figure out what its task will be.
2 step
We repeat the elements from step 1, moving the hand from the dog's nose, diagonally, over his shoulder. But this time, we don't praise and reward him until he rolls over. We practice this step at least five times.
3 step
We start with the exercise from step 2, but without the treat in hand. When the pet rolls over on its back, we praise the dog with enthusiasm (“good” or “good dog”), stroke it and reward it with a treat. We repeat this element at least five times.
4 step
Now we arrange the selected hand in the shape of a gun. We move it (arranged in this shape) in front of the dog's nose and direct it diagonally over his shoulder. When your pup rolls over onto his back, reward him with a treat. Then we repeat this exercise several times.
5 step
At this stage, we add a verbal command to step 4. When the dog has already rolled over, we immediately say the command dead dog and at the same time indicate the conventional gesture of "pistol". Praise and reward the dog when it reacts appropriately, i.e. rolls over on its back and freezes in this pose for a moment.
6 step
In the last step, we move away from the dog (2-3 meters) and perform the exercise described in the previous step. If he responds correctly, of course, we reward him and give him a release command or release signal. We gradually increase the distance from the dog until he is able to perform the command dead dog from a distance and from other positions: sitting or standing, and later even when the dog is moving.
What should you pay special attention to when learning the dead dog command?
Training a dead dog command requires a friendly approach and a lot of patience, because each quadruped is unique and learns at a different pace. Good communication with a four-legged friend is also necessary, as well as consistency in action.
It is worth remembering to conduct training sessions in a good mood and to end training as soon as your pet shows fatigue, boredom or frustration. In order to teach the ward to stay longer in the dead dog position, the time between a correctly performed exercise and praise and giving a well-deserved reward should be gradually extended.
We use short training sessions (5-15 minutes), repeated quite often, preferably 2-3 times a day.
You should always finish training on a positive note, e.g. carefree fun or a portion of caresses.
