Learning to clean at home
We must be aware that the puppy is taken care of at home not to spite us. He has simply not been taught otherwise, and besides, he is unable to hold on to his needs for long. If we want to teach the dog to keep clean, first of all, we choose places where the dog can do the things at home. There shouldn't be too many of them, we usually set a maximum of two. When your pet begins to twitch nervously or smell the floor, place it immediately in a litter box or on a mat. In the first step, it is a convenient solution, because the center of the hygiene mats is made of extremely absorbent cellulose fibers that absorb the unpleasant smell of urine, and the waterproof bottom prevents the liquid content from flowing out. Each time the dog settles down on the mat or in the litter box, it should be praised and rewarded with a treat.
When studying, we should show a great deal of understanding and patience. You must not scream, punish your dog for mistakes, or stick your nose in the droppings. In this way, we can only introduce unnecessary stress and teach the dog bad habits. You just need to clean up the litter and make sure you remove any odors that might tempt your puppy to repeat the steps.
If the dog does not want to do his errands outside, but only do his errands at home, e.g. on a mat, then he probably got used to defecation only on a specific surface. In such a situation, if we notice that the puppy starts to twist and sniffs, take the mat outside the house and, holding the dog on a leash, guide him to the mat. Each time we reinforce the message with the command "take care of yourself" and wait for it to be done. Then we praise it very much and reward it with your favorite snack. In order to teach a dog to take care of himself outside, we must be patient, because this method requires us to go outside the house even every two hours.
How to teach a dog to kill outside?
Special pads, mats and litter boxes are a good solution if your pet is just learning to keep the house clean. They are also perfect for sick, elderly or treated dogs that cannot go outside for a walk. Remember, however, that in the case of a puppy, the use of various accessories should be a transitional element. In the next step, the accessories should disappear from the house and the dog should be taught to take care of things outside without using them.
The more often the dog goes for walks, the greater the chance that it will be dealing with its needs outside. Of course, any such incident must be rewarded for the message to be amplified. Walks should not be long, the most important thing is that they should be regular. It is better to go out with your pet a few times a day for a short walk than for one very long walk. It is worth remembering that dogs usually take care of their needs a moment after eating, after waking up or playing intensively. Therefore, immediately after a meal, it is worth taking your dog for a walk and walk with him until he takes care of all his needs. If the pet participated in play, with one of the household members or took a nap, we should also go for a walk with him immediately after these activities. In addition, it is always worth going out with the dog in the evening, just before going to bed. Dogs are intelligent animals, and when they see the collar and leash in their owner's hand, they quickly understand that it is time to attend to their needs.
Some final tips
To sum up, in order to teach your dog to do his errands outside, make sure you have the right plan.
- Walks. We plan at least 8-10 walks a day, with breaks no longer than 3-4 hours. For a walk, we choose the time after meals, after sleeping, after playing. Let us remember about leashbecause puppies don't know anything about safety yet.
- Motivation. We reward the dog's right behavior, which is when he kills himself outside. We praise him with a cheerful, gentle tone of voice and present his favorite treat.
- Fails. This is an indispensable part of learning. We do not apply penalties when the pet takes care of itself at home.
- Accessories for learning cleanliness. We choose those that will lead to the development of proper habits (mat, litter box, leash, harness, collar) and avoid those that can become a source of fear in the dog.
- Patience and patience again!
It may take us some time to train a dog to do things outside, but when we are systematic, each puppy will sooner or later learn to do this and learn to be clean in the house. For our part, we can only accelerate this process through a gentle, consistent and understanding approach.
