Goldendoodle and his health
Scientific data on common goldendoodle diseases and propensity to actual genetic diseases from both populations are unknown. And although the available studies conducted in the last decade did not confirm the predisposition to inherit certain diseases from parent breeds, theoretically, diseases specific to the poodle and golden retriever, such as:
- hip and elbow dysplasia,
- eye diseases (e.g. glaucoma, cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy),
- osteochondrosis (a cartilage and bone disorder),
- allergy,
- enostosis (osteitis),
- inflammation of the ears (deafness)
- gastric dilatation and torsion.
During the control visit to the veterinary office, it is worth performing a preventive examination of the hips, eyes and ears. In addition, wheat, corn and soybeans, which are potentially allergenic products, should be excluded from the daily diet. It is best to give your dog high-quality dry food, fresh meat, whole vegetables, and properly selected vitamin supplements. In addition, you should pay special attention to the correct weight of your pet and limit treats to less active charges, and in return offer an additional portion of fun or caresses.
The average life expectancy of a goldendoodle is 10-15 years.
Character and training
Raising a goldendoodle should not be difficult, even for an inexperienced owner. Both parent breeds of this dog are quick-witted, persistent, and show a strong need to work for their owners. It can therefore be expected that their descendant will inherit this set of dominant traits. Additionally, the goldendoodle is very intelligent, energetic, and has an open, kind character, which makes it a thankful partner in education. The key to successful learning is consistency, patience and positive reinforcement.
The Goldendoodle has a great need for exercise. He loves activities that combine cognitive and physical elements, therefore he achieves the best training results during outdoor activities. He likes to fetch, loves to swim. It is great at many sports, such as agility, dogfrisbee or dancing with a dog.
Goldendoodle has a reputation for being the perfect companion for active people, children and seniors. He is friendly and extremely sociable. He is happy to take part in all family activities. It also feels great around other animals. The Goldendoodle is a versatile working dog. It is used in kynotherapy (rehabilitation through human-dog contact), as well as a rescue dog, entitled to rescue and search operations, both on land and in water.
How to cultivate a goldendoodle?
Grooming this quadruped is not difficult. It is worth remembering to brush periodically (once or twice a week) to get rid of dead hair and ensure an aesthetic, shiny appearance of the coat. In addition, the hair around the eyes and between the toes requires regular trimming. In order to avoid tarnishing the fur and to keep the skin of your four-legged friend in good condition, it is worth bathing him every few months in shampoos for sensitive skin. Of course, checking the teeth, cleaning the ears, shortening the claws, taking care of the annual vaccinations, and providing protection against parasites are routine activities that should be included in the care calendar for your pet.
Worth knowing
The term "goldendoodle" was first used in 1955 by Sir Donald Campbell to describe a dog obtained by crossing a Labrador and a poodle. However, it was not until the eighties of the last century that this cross gained publicity. The Australian breeder Wally Cornor significantly contributed to the popularization of the goldendoodle. Currently, this dog enjoys the greatest recognition in Australia and the USA. However, it does not have a model approved by the International Cynological Federation (FCI). Breeders consistently strive to define the goldendoodle pattern, but so far no one has specified what a representative of this breed should look like and what character traits it must be distinguished by.
