The English Bulldog, although sometimes appearing sluggish, is a resolute, strong and active dog. His athletic, awe-inspiring posture contrasts with his gentle disposition. He is joyful, sociable, caring and perfect as a family dog ​​and companion.

Appearance

The English Bulldog is one of the oldest British breeds, associated all over the world with stubbornness and the famous John Bull. According to the FCI classification, it belongs to group 2 Schnauzers, Pinschers, Molossians, Swiss Sheepdogs, section 2.1 of the doggy type molossers. The English bulldog is medium-sized, stocky, squat dog, with a massive, compact build. It has a broad, heavy head with characteristic folds, a short back and a clearly marked stop. Thick lips hang down on both sides of the slightly protruding lower jaw. 

Bulldogs have strongly muscled (full length), short limbs. Their thick, usually medium-length tail tapers sharply towards the tip. They own  smooth, short, close-fitting hair that is very soft to the touch. Dogs of this breed are usually solid or masked: beige, white. Less common are individuals with brindle or spotted hair (various shades of red). Adult males are up to 40 cm tall (females 38 cm) and weigh from 23 to 27 kg (females from 21 to 25 kg). Despite their stature and formidable appearance, they are gentle by nature.

English Bulldog - nature

The English Bulldog is an intelligent dog with a moderate, balanced (seemingly phlegmatic) temperament. In fact, he has completely lost the aggressiveness and militancy that characterized his ancestors. Cheerful and eager to play, he likes to show off and be the center of attention. He does not tolerate closure and loneliness, and boredom can adversely affect his psyche. When he is alone at home for a long time, he tends to destroy things. She loves spending time with household members. He is sensitive, devoted, needs a lot of tenderness and attention. By nature, he is very protective of his relatives and distrustful and distant towards strangers. 

He is characterized by a developed caring instinct, standing up for the household may turn out to be really dangerous. However, it will not work as a guard dog.  It has a complex character, on the one hand it is active and lively, on the other hand it has a tendency to laze around. He loves lounging on the couch and is certainly closer to peace and relaxation than excessive physical activity. On the one hand, faithful and devoted, on the other, an individualist, endowed with donkey stubbornness who accepts only those commands that suit him.

Feeding the English Bulldog

Both adolescent and mature English Bulldogs need a well-balanced diet, i.e. high-quality food rich in minerals. substances that protect and regenerate articular cartilage (glucosamine, chondroitin). Portions should be adapted to the degree of physical activity of the pet and served at fixed times. It is best to divide the daily portion into at least two meals. Due to gastric problems, food should not be served too early or too late.

The short hair of an English Bulldog is enough to comb or wipe with a damp towel once a week. During the moulting period (three times a year), the frequency of grooming treatments should be increased and the hair should be combed daily (preferably furminator). Particular attention should be paid to the care of sensitive areas, i.e. the paranasal and dorsal folds of the skin. In order to avoid fungal or bacterial infections, the skin of these areas should be dry. In addition, we regularly wash the folds near the eyes and nose, shorten claws that are too long and take care of the ears by dropping a self-cleaning agent into the inside of the ear (every 2 weeks).

Health

The most common diseases affecting this breed include:

  • prolapse of the gland of the third eyelid (cherry eye),
  • defects of the eyelid positioning (ectropion and entropion).
  • hair follicle dysplasia, combined with seasonal side baldness, 
  • hip and elbow dysplasia, 
  • prolapse of the kneecap, 
  • narrowing of the trachea and pulmonary arteries,

It should be remembered that representatives of this breed are not very resistant to high temperatures, they have a tendency to angina, dermatitis and sunstroke. Therefore, on hot days, you should protect your pet from overheating, providing him with constant access to water and a cool place to rest.

English Bulldog and accessories

For an English bulldog, a regular one works best strong collar and/ or well-fitting harness i solid lanyard. Due to the risk of suffocation, it is not advisable to use collars and chains. However, all toys should be large and solid so that your pet does not swallow them. Balls and thick cords will be a good choice.
