Easy walk harness

Here's the second part in a series of rules on how to teach your dog to pull on a leash.

If you missed part one, check out these shoots! There you will find an introduction along with the most important rules that you need to know before starting training. There will be 3 articles in this series. Their author is Olga Maciejewska, Mama Behawiorysta.

>> What to do to prevent the dog from dragging on a walk?

First and foremost, you need to know that harness alone will not teach a dog walking on a loose leash. Simultaneous training is needed.

"Easy Walk" harness has fastening at the frontthanks to which, when your dog tightens the leash, it automatically turns towards the handler, which prevents pulling. The doggy is not able to pull, as in ordinary harness, in which the fastening is on the back.

When your dog starts to pull and tighten the leash:

  1. Stop;
  2. Smack or make any other neutral noise that draws his attention;
  3. When your dog turns to you - praise him !;
  4. Change the direction of the walk, then the dog will automatically follow you on a loose leash (if you want to reach the selected place, or you have a planned walking route, you can return to it when the dog starts following you);
  5. Reward him at this point with a good word and a treat.

The leash must be attached to the easy walk harness between the handler and the dog, it must not curl over the back of the animal. The leash should connect the dog and handler by the shortest route.

It is very important in the beginning frequent rewarding and praising the dog for walking easily on a leash.

This exercise is worth starting in a quiet placewhere there won't be much distraction for the dog. Find a place where there are no dogs or people - it will help you focus. Skaters, children playing or dogs running up without asking can be a huge challenge at first, avoid them.

Then gradually build up the distractions that your dog has to offer. Once your dog has mastered loose leash walking, reward him less often, but remember about it surprising the dogso that he does not know when and what treat will appear. Always yet you should praise him verbally.

The "easy walk" harness is a training harness, therefore they cannot be used for life. Once your dog has mastered the ability to walk on a loose leash, you can return to your favorite collar or harness. However, remember to consistently reward you for easy walking and to avoid pulling.

Learning to walk calmly on a leash is important and will make your life easier. However, take care to provide the dog time to sniff and run freely in safe places. You can then use a long training rope several meters long. Summon your dog and reward each time he comes up to you. This way, your dog will learn that there is always something positive about going back to the sitter. Unfortunately, recalling a dog for him often means the end of free running or fastening on a leash and returning home, so it is worth changing it.

Remember that your relationships are very important, so keep developing and nurturing them, and some problems will disappear on their own. Let your dog be a dog, kind of banal, but very important. Let's not forget about meeting the dog's needs, so please respect his natural curiosity about the surrounding environment.

When living with your dog in the city, it is essential to take your dog for walks. However, if we take most of our walks with the dog on a leash and the dog pulls us unbearably, the walk turns into a survival school for both ends of the leash. What to do to make walking together a real pleasure?

We are crazy about the intensity of colors. In private, we both love gray, because all the colors look stunning against it. In our company, we decided that all carabiners (also known as carabiners) will have their own colors. Our leashes come in two widths: 1,5 cm for smaller dogs (recommended for dogs up to about 10 kg), and 2,5 cm for the larger ones. […]
