Catahoula Leopard Dog – history of the breed

The Catahoula leopard dog is a breed that comes from the USA and is recognized by the United Kennel Club (January 1, 1995). It was first officially registered in the United States in 1950. Little is known about the history of its creation. In 1539, the Spanish brought their mastiffs and greyhounds to what is now Louisiana. The Indians who took care of the dogs left by the Spaniards most likely mixed them with wolves lurking around the camps. When the French arrived in the area in 1700, they found unusual spotted dogs with light eyes. However, modern DNA analyzes have disproved the assumption that the Catahoula Leopard Dog is descended from red wolves. According to another theory, the breed was created by crossing Beaucerons, imported by French settlers in the XNUMXth century, with dogs of the indigenous American population.

During the times of colonization in the Wild West, strong dogs adapted to difficult environmental conditions were sought. For this reason, the Catahoula Leopard Dog has become a popular farm dog. He was an excellent hunting dog, as well as a shepherd and guard dog. It was said that he had the spirit of a wolf, the speed of a greyhound, the strength of a mastiff and the determination of a Beuceron. It was used to hunt large game such as boar, bear and mountain lion, but also to herd cattle and catch smaller animals such as raccoons and squirrels.

Catahoula Leopard Dog Health

The Catahoula Leopard Dog is generally a hardy and healthy dog, but there are specific health issues to watch out for. The breed may be susceptible to hip dysplasia and deafness. Hip dysplasia is a genetic disease that can lead to deformation, degeneration and inflammation of the joints. Unilateral or bilateral deafness is generally associated with the merle gene, which determines several appearance features (primarily related to pigmentation). Therefore, you should choose proven breeders that use the BAER test (hearing function test). In addition, the breed is prone to eye diseases, in particular progressive retinal atrophy (a condition that can lead to blindness). Therefore, regular examinations are recommended for early detection and treatment of this disease. Additionally, remember that vaccinations are an important part of every dog's routine health care. Regular prevention against parasites such as fleas and ticks is also recommended.

The average lifespan of a Catahoula Leopard Dog is 12 to 13 years.
