Dog breeds with hair - which dogs have hair?

The common opinion is that there are many stereotypes about dog hair. One of them is related to the belief that apart from quadrupeds, which do not have hair for genetic reasons, there are two categories of dogs. The first includes four-legged friends with fur. The second includes dog breeds with hair. The time has come to clear your doubts on this point.

Dog breeds with hair

Two-layer robe

Animal hair usually consists of two layers: the undercoat and the topcoat. The undercoat is a soft, short and dense part of fur that is located directly next to the animal's skin, under the outer coat. It fulfills a very important thermal insulation function. It is waterproof, protects against moisture and changes in ambient temperature. It is this layer that undergoes the molting process.

Dog breeds with hair - but hair is hair too!

Six to twelve undercoat hairs surround one topcoat, serving as the scaffolding for the outercoat. Some breeds are characterized by extremely fluffy, especially abundant undercoat, which requires special attention and increased care (e.g. Siberian Husky or Bernese Mountain Dog). In turn, the Maltese, which impresses with its long, delicate hair, has only one layer of hair, which means that it does not have an undercoat under the top coat. And it is precisely these quadrupeds with one coat that are commonly considered dogs with hair (instead of fur).

All dogs shed

Both the top coat and the undercoat have a development cycle. It is a genetically determined process. After reaching a certain length, each hair stops growing, slowly dies and falls out. A new hair is then formed in the hair follicle. In dogs, this usually increases twice a year. The pet makes lines, changing its coat to one that is more adapted to the weather conditions outside. All four-legged friends shed their hair, and so do dogs with so-called hair. However, in the case of representatives of dog breeds without an undercoat, the shedding is less spectacular. Sometimes even imperceptibly. On the other hand, in most double-layered dogs, the molting period is associated with intensive grooming and a strenuous fight to keep the house clean.

Breeds of dogs with hair - the most popular breeds.

Among the most popular dog breeds with hair are:

YORKSHIRE - TERRIER

This is a miniature breed famous for its long hair. York is a cheerful faithful companion with a strong character. He is bursting with energy. His coat is smooth, straight and silky. It requires special care. Puppies are usually born black, and the characteristic shades of steel-brown fur appear gradually. From the back of the head to the tip of the tail, the hair takes a steel color with blue highlights. The head is light brown in shade with a brown sheen. Next to the skin, the hair is darker than the light ends. Long hair in a golden shade falls on the muzzle. A distinctive feature of this breed is a lighter shade of fur in summer than in other seasons.

HAVANA

He is a friendly, playful dog. He is strongly attached to the guardian. She loves games and the company of household members. She does not take solitude well. The Havanese has silky, soft-to-the-touch hair of considerable length (generally 12 to 19 cm). Most often the hair is straight or slightly wavy, fawn in color or in various shades of brown, less often black or white. The pattern allows for patches as well as darkening in these colors. Havanese hair requires careful care. This is because it grows quite fast and has a tendency to form

knots and felting. That is why regular brushing is necessary, using accessories and preparations to detangle tangled hair.

Maltese

He is a lively, gentle dog, always ready to play. He has a friendly nature and a cheerful disposition. She doesn't take loneliness well. He is devoted and loves human company. She has a delicate, shiny, snow-white robe, the maintenance of which requires a lot of work. Systematic treatments, daily combing and weekly bathing are necessary.

AFGHAN HOUND

He is a strong, majestic hunting dog. Independent, proud, sometimes haughty, and aloof from strangers. It has a very long top coat on the front, sides of the body and on the front and hind legs. On the head, very long, soft, fine hair separates in the middle and falls on both sides. The hair on the back is short and forms a saddle that is characteristic of this breed. The coat of the Afghan hound tends to form tangles. For this reason, maintenance is demanding and time-consuming. Afghans should be brushed several times a week and bathed once a week. Therefore, the lint should be systematically removed.

ITALIAN CHARCIK (Piccolo Leviero Italiano)

He is a graceful, very intelligent dog with a slender figure and a filigree build. He is endowed with a strong hunting instinct. He is active and lively. Shows high sensitivity. She has short, fine, silky hair that fits snugly against her body. The most common color is uniform in black, gray and light beige. The standard allows for white discoloration on the chest and feet. Short hair without an undercoat makes it get cold quickly and does not like low temperatures. It is very easy to care for, has virtually no shedding and is very clean by nature.
