Papillon - history of the breed

The roots of the Continental Spaniel date back to medieval times. It was known in Spain as early as the 1935th century. Probably at the beginning of the 1990th century, he appeared at the French court. The papillon dog was a favorite of rulers and aristocracy. He enjoyed great popularity at the courts in Spain, France and Italy. He was often immortalized in oil portraits, because he was considered an elegant companion by the aristocracy and nobility. His appearance, however, was different from the current pattern. After the French Revolution, the breed almost completely fell into oblivion. Only in the XNUMXth century in France (England and Belgium are also mentioned equally) to save the miniature spaniel, a miniature spitz was crossed with a chihuahua, and this is how the "butterfly dog" was created, whose erect ears resemble butterfly wings. However, there was still a long breeding process before the first breed standard, adopted in XNUMX. It wasn't until XNUMX that the Papillon was recognized as a separate breed by the FCI.

What does a papillon look like?

The Papillon is a cute, gentle dog with ears that resemble the wings of a moth or butterfly. The muzzle is short, narrow in relation to the skull. The stop is particularly pronounced in smaller specimens, but does not form a characteristic heel. The Papillon has high-set, erect ears that should never be carried straight, but form an angle of about 45 degrees to the horizontal. The almond-shaped eyes appear large and wide open. They are set relatively low and seem very expressive due to the dark color.
The Papillon has a medium-length neck with a slightly arched nape that allows for a proud and graceful posture. The long chest is broad and deep, and the ribs and loins are well sprung. The bottom line of the profile is slightly raised. The papillon's legs are straight and strong, although they seem very delicate. The gait of the dog is free and elegant. The coat is silky, wavy, of medium length and has a rich texture. Papilon is bred in all color variations, but always with a basic white color. An adult dog measures about 28 cm at the withers and reaches a body weight in two categories: less than 2,5 kg and 2,5–4,5 kg for males and 2,5–5 kg for bitches.

Papillon - care, health and nutrition

The Papillon has medium-length fur that becomes prone to matting without proper care. This is why regular brushing (preferably every other day) is so important. It is worth remembering that the papillon has long fur on the ears, which requires special care. Baths should be used only in exceptional cases, because the hair of the papillon does not have a characteristic dog smell. Shearing the fur is also not necessary. Since the eyes of a quadruped have a tendency to water, pay attention to sensitive areas and systematically wash the area around the eyes.

Papillon is a healthy dog breed, it happens that some individuals suffer from slipping kneecaps. In terms of nutrition, the little pet is also not demanding.
