Polish Hunting Dog - history of the breed

The first mention of Polish hounds dates back to the 1823th century. It is believed that this breed is derived from the crossing of other European breeds of hunting dogs such as: St. Hubert, a Russian-Mongolian Kostroma hound. In the 1825th-XNUMXth centuries, dog hunting was very popular among the nobility, so descriptions of these dogs often appeared in chronicles. The breed was famous for its excellent sense of smell and hearing. The description of hound dogs by Ignacy Bogatyński (XNUMX-XNUMX) can be regarded as the prototype of the modern standard. After World War I, the Polish Hound was used in our country primarily in hunting. After World War II, purebred hounds, like many other breeds, virtually disappeared.

An important role in their reconstruction was played by Col. Piotr Kartawik and Col. Józef Pawłusiewicz, who started purposeful breeding in the early 60s. Soon both varieties of dogs were registered under the name Polish Hound. The standard adapted to Colonel Kartawik's dogs was recognized by the FCI in 1965. It was only in 1983 that the Kennel Club in Poland opened a preliminary book under the name Polish Hound, and the first pedigree representative of this breed was bred in 1989. The current standard was supplemented in 2000 with the extension of acceptable colors. The breed, recognized by the FCI in 2006 as the fifth indigenous dog breed, was registered under number 354.

Polish Hound and its appearance

According to the FCI classification, the Polish Hound belongs to group 6 - hounds, bloodhounds and related breeds, section 1.2 - medium-sized hounds. The standard describes the hound as a robust, strong dog of medium height, with a compact body and strong bones. Its appearance is associated with lightness, agility and elegance, to a lesser extent with speed and endurance. Dogs of this breed reach 55 - 59 cm in height at the withers and weigh 25 - 30 kg, while female dogs respectively: 50 - 55 cm, 20 - 26 kg. The head of the Polish Hound is rectangular, proportional to the body, and the muzzle is equal to the length of the skull. The skin on the forehead forms folds. The stop is poorly marked. Jaws strong, scissor bite. The hanging ears are triangular in shape and slightly rounded at the ends. Dark brown eyes are clearly slanted.

The Polish Hunting Dog has a compact, slender body, with a straight, well-muscled back and a deep, broad chest. The tail, covered with thick hair, is set low and reaches the hock. The feet are muscular, strong and lean. The coat is short, hard, with a thick undercoat and close to the dog's body. The coat color of the Polish Hound can be black and tan, brown and tan, chocolate red and red. Tan spots are found on the eyelids, cheeks, muzzle, larynx, chest, inner thighs and shoulders, metatarsus, underside of the tail and under the tail. White markings on the lower legs and chest are allowed.

Character and skills

The Polish Hunting Dog is a balanced, energetic, agile dog with a calm, gentle character. Brave and fearless in the face of danger, distrustful and wary of strangers. It is an obedient and devoted companion. Intelligent and easy to train, although it is worth remembering that he does not like excessive pressure when learning. He responds best to positive training methods and learning while having fun. After proper training and socialization, he gets along well with other pets.

The Polish Hunting Dog builds a strong bond with all family members. He is very affectionate and loyal. He is patient with children, but due to his size and energy potential, his play with children should be supervised. Patience, consistency and a friendly approach play an important role in his upbringing. To avoid undesirable behavior, it is worth setting clear rules and boundaries for your pet from the very beginning. The Polish Hound is certainly not a couch dog, it must lead an active lifestyle. He is energetic and eager to play, needs a lot of exercise. When he is bored, he may exhibit destructive and rebellious behavior. Due to his energetic disposition, he is a great companion for those people who can provide him with the right level of physical activity: long walks, jogging and cycling next to the owner, swimming or practicing dog sports.

Care

Polish Hound care treatments are not demanding. The dog has short hair, which is enough to be combed once a week (always combing with the hair), a bit more often during the moulting period. After a walk, you can wipe the cover with a damp towel. The four-legged friend also does not need frequent baths, it is enough to bathe him 1-2 times every 3 months, unless he rubs in something or gets dirty during a walk. Regularly wash the eye area with a cotton swab dipped in water or chamomile infusion, and trim the nails if they do not rub themselves. The ears of the Polish Hound require special attention, which should be systematically checked and cleaned. Otherwise, purulent otitis may occur.

Polish Hunting Dog and his health and longevity

The Polish Hound is considered a hardy and healthy dog breed. However, there are some conditions that you should pay attention to, such as: hip and elbow dysplasia, inflammation of the eyes, otitis media. After many years of hound observations, a tendency to hypothyroidism was also found. The average life expectancy of representatives of this breed is 12-15 years.
